There is no doubt that we have all been feeling a bit cooped up, first by COVID, then by the heat. In time, like everything, it will pass.
Arizona’s state parks and many campgrounds are open, although, some with restrictions. Whether it is this Fall, Winter, or beyond, when you head out for a camping adventure, there are a few things that you should consider with regard to your insurance.
Summer outings involve equipment and toys that pose unique risks:
- RVs—Today’s RVs are loaded with the comforts of home—in fact, they are a blend of home plus auto; therefore, it’s no surprise that appropriate insurance coverage is a blend of homeowners and auto insurance.
- Trailers—Even those who opt for a cabin or tent instead of an RV often attach a trailer to the car to transport equipment. Tents, tarps, fishing tackle, life preservers, jet skis, kayaks, ATVs—you get the picture.
Your existing homeowners, renters, or auto policies may cover some of these risks. For example
- Most homeowners policies provide liability coverage for motorboats with up to a 25 horsepower outboard and sailboats less than 26 feet long.
- Many auto policies provide some liability coverage for a trailer.
With any insurance, however, the devil is in the details. You need to check about limitations and exceptions to coverage. For example, you may not be covered for comprehensive claims—that is, damage to your trailer resulting from severe weather or vandals.
Check with your agent to find out coverage details. Explore the extent of coverage you have for expenses resulting from common situations:
- If another is injured or another’s property is damaged to pay for bodily injury to another or damage to another’s property (liability coverage)
- If your RV, trailer, or property being transported is damaged or destroyed by accident (collision coverage) or by theft, fire, or severe weather (comprehensive coverage)
- If the person responsible for damaging your property is uninsured or underinsured
- If you need roadside assistance or emergency expense coverage
- If your personal property is adequately insured
- If you plan to live in your RV, should you have “full-timers” coverage
